The 3Al2O3·2SiO2 Powder, commonly known as mullite, is engineered for use in plasma spray applications within Environmental Barrier Coating (EBC) systems. These coatings are vital for protecting Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) in aerospace environments, withstanding temperatures up to 1300°C (2370°F). Mullite is chosen for its low thermal expansion, minimal thermal conductivity, and excellent phase stability under high-temperature conditions.

Mullite is typically applied over a silicon-based bond coat to prevent moisture intrusion that could weaken the EBC system. For additional protection, a top coat of rare earth silicates such as barium strontium aluminosilicate (BSAS), or a combination of BSAS and mullite, is used to enhance the system's service life and temperature resilience.
